Arabica
- taste is sweeter (chocolate) and richer
- flavor is more intense
- more acidic
- high quality and often more expensive
- grown in high altitudes
- used in over 60% of global coffee
Robusta
- bitter taste
- less intense aroma
- used in instant coffee
- double the caffeine of others
- leaves a dry aftertaste
- added to espresso blends for consistent flavor
- great for sugar & creamer
Liberica
- grown in Liberia & Southeast Asia
- plant can grow up to 19 feet tall with large leaves but not many beans
- harsh, acidic taste
- medium to low quality
- accounts for only about 2% of coffee around the world
Excelsa
- rarest of all bean types
- known as the “gourmet” or “exotic” coffee bean due to “superior” flavor
- beans are small, round and deep red in color
- plants don’t produce many beans
- expensive & hard to find
- dominant, earthy flavor
- used in specialty drinks
